{PTC/STA} CT053, 2 pics for "DiAmOnD T"

Postby leopard1543 » Sat Jan 20, 2007 1:45 pm

Leyland OPSU1/1 m/o.2734 was new in August, 1953 and withdrawn from passenger service in August, 1977 (my records indicate that 2734 was out of service as early as May, 1977). Heavily modified and converted to a tow truck in April, 1978 it was regestered as CT053.
Pictured here at Hamilton Workshops on 23/5/90 it was nearing the end of its towing career.

The photograph below was taken just over 10 years earlier on 6/5/80.
CT053 prepares to tow withdrawn Royal Tiger 2710 which is surrounded by MKI/MKII Leopards and new MKII Mercedes.

Over in New York, the Port Authority runs a number of tow trucks on Mack chassis with similar very short wheelbases. They are use mainly in the single direction tunnels under the river for recovery work, the short base makes it possible for them to do a U turn easily; in the event of an accident/ breakdown, they can come in "wrong way" to collect the problem.

THey do look weird when you see them first time, and they bounce around a bit on the road.
