Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

It's been century since electrification of Sydney's suburban network began. Now we have a driverless Metros sprouting including the conversion of one of the lines electrified 100 years ago or thereabouts in the 1920s. The 2020s is certainly not as stylish.

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

I wish there was some on the Central coast. I think theres only political impetus to have them in the Sydney metro area. We still don't know why Busways hasn't seen fit to signwrite them in their logo. A very different approach to the former STA who would make sure you know they are operating them a...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

There is ample opportunity for interchange at Chatswood and Barangaroo. Would you remove the crossovers at Barangaroo and install new ones at Central? I am confident there would have been an analysis and reasons behind the placement of the points where they were placed. You're confident in what Aus...

Still majority of the Element 1s at Penrith are without busways logos which seems peculiar as even the maintenance vans are covered in them
Suggests to me they are on trial and not committed to them yet.

Re: Egged Video Singing Staff.

I appreciate the background information you're able to provide and the translation! I'm figuring the staff singing in the video are lip synching their own prerecorded voice done in a recording studio. We can only dream of this level of passion and pride within any Australian organisation. Those driv...

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

I only watched the bit mentioned, without headphones, although the bus' more pronounced notes came through quite clearly, and what a sound that was! I need to re-watch that in its entirety with a good headset. Wonder how a Voith persuaded (probably manually) into 1st would compare? The sound qualit...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

Not to mention the bus lanes will fulfil their purpose more when their's more traffic from no tunnel.
They think private mostly single occupant vehicles are entitled to have the buses share the burden with them at times of crisis that has nothing to do with the buses.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

First in a Voith, by the admission of their own literature, is designed to get the engine into its optimum power & torque zone quickly, and when on a grade, hold it in that area to make hill climbs easier. The Voith DIWA851.2s certainly didn't always do that in the Sl202s I got to drive up vari...

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

They have proven to have reduced their fuel consumption by a small amount which adds up over time x number of buses. I bet Busways wishes they went the Voith route before, although I have observed drivers negating their benefits by holding the accelerator beyond the kickdown detent revving them out ...

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

That didn't stop B12BLEs being used. A Dana Spicer would have shaved off thousands from the purchase price and given a super smooth predictable ride, with a robust transmission with little to go wrong. The unicorn would be a CVT for buses which Leyland were developing in the early 80s. Someone shoul...

Shows how tight the privates could be that they'd run used austerity buses that were designed as a temporary measure to keep services running during war time, but these companies chose to continue their use when real buses could be had.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

With the torque today's engines make, a one speed would be fine. Just add a two speed auxilliary gearbox off limits to drivers for any open road driving required.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

Both Brisbane and Perth have each taken delivery of a handful of Voith B8s as well, although the one or two I've travelled on didn't seem to be programmed appropriately and seemed to hunt gears a bit, which wasn't what I was expecting. They're a brilliant gearbox for city work when properly matched...
