The only thing wrong with alum composite is that it is quite easily damaged and repair is not easy, especially if you have used a prepainted one. Lots of options, alum, colourbond, fibreglass, all have their plusses and minuses, use what best suits your skill set. It WILL get some damage from use, t...

Re: Double decker conversion in Brisbane
I will jump in here after doing a couple of single deckers. 1. Investigate what can be done with house paint. I have been told about people doing busses with house enamel while panels are hot for a very good finish, but like any paint prep is the key. Brush and roller application. 2. You are taking ...

Rubbish ! Once you get the hang of it some people don't even use the clutch.
Expensive damage ? Autos way more expensive than a manual box to rebuild.
I would hazard a guess the last post is by someone who could not master a synchro box, let alone a crash box.

Ah that takes me back a couple of years, getting up at 3:30 on a Sunday to be in my coach for a 4 am start, no bugger about to hear me grinding the gears. Once the lightbulb moment happens you will start to enjoy it, I even swapped our 6 speed cash box for a 7 speed crash box. Be aware autos waste p...

I have 2 tachos, one is the original tachograph that I spent a small fortune getting rebuilt, but they set it wrong, other is a VDO cockpit one but it changes with he weather can't rely on it either.

No to diesel heaters for us, we us reverse cycle aircons to do that job. We use Rich Electric inverters but no longer available here. We have several cheap chingnon inverters you can try and resurrect if you like but they have been out in the weather where I tossd them, you get where I am going with...

Can't remember exactly but I think around $1600, you can get an accurate quote on the Qld Tranny website though, so yeah more expensive than some states but easier to get plates on, many people then rego somewhere else.

Wow, this seems to happen again and again, motorhomes or would be ones are a problem for all rego boys, they don't seem to handle the transition well. Gives you the chance to "comply" with their requirements before you get it inspected again. Of course, if you get a permit to drive over he...

Re: the fun begins
As we used the coremat FG we were left with an edge to cover, we did this with aluminium angle around all the doors, it is not too intrusive to the clean look we were after (no bin door handles, all internal air locks) Along the top edge of the bins we just used a piece of flat, looks the same. Othe...

Re: the fun begins
Fix it first, the first job you want done is to keep the structure free of more rust. As for sheeting, VP now has a fibreglass body, totally, no ripples. But then I did use coremat sheets which end up about 6mm thick but are way stiffer than just fg sheets which are 2-3mm. Other option is colourbond...

Re: Double decker conversion in Brisbane
Most obvious is diff ratio, my first conversion was an AEC Sydney suburban bus, geared for that work, was pretty painful let me tell you, so I know right where you are coming from. Changed the diff centre and it became a 95 kph bus, didn't make any difference if the trailer with Moke and Boat was on...

You don't mention what size solar panels but even 250 watt ones, you need more than 2 if you are not going to have any other power source. Educate yourself about Lithium batteries as well, far, far better system than lead acids Other than that, realistically it is a small vehicle for 4 people to ful...

I am in Queensland and if you do the roof raise (don't even consider dropping the floor unless you have a hi deck) you will need an Authorised Modification Officer to certify it, not too hard as some are pretty easy. BUT you may find that blue plate is not recognised in some other states, especially...

There's 2 words that should never be used in the same sentence, budget and custom motorhome builder !!!
Why not tackle yourself, you will save heaps, learn new skills, but, and most important, when something goes awry, you will be able to fix it because you made it.

Long road ahead of you Tox, as anyone finished can attest. Or is anyone ever finished ? I know each time we get back to the farm there is a list of things to do. Welding steering parts is a no no. It is going to be hard to get your result remotely. For steering parts have you tried the truck and bus power steering mob in Archerfield Allpowersteering, they carry heaps of the sort of stuff you are looking for. If one uni joint is crook, replace both and save y...

Wow 14.3 mtrs, imagine turning that into a motorhome. On second thought we get plenty of caravan park owners that poop themselves when we pull up in VP and she is only 12.5, although the trailer takes us out to nearly 19. We have had both a spicer and fuller eaton gearbox in her and both have had th...
